Another EP made its way across my desk a while back and I finally circled back to give it a proper listen and was pleasantly surprised when I took the 4-track disc for a spin.  Disc opener and title track “Funky Queen” packs a punch with fuzzy guitars, heavy handed bass lines, and vocals that come ripping through the speakers with power and melody, making Marcella one of my favorite new vocalists.  Hailing from Detroit, MI, I have heard my share of the MC5 classic “Kick Out The Jam” but this version maintains the urgency and attitude of the original while allowing the guitars and vocals to stamp Black Mirrors all over this.  The title of the EP certainly provides a perfect description of the vibe woven throughout the short collection of songs – funky.  “The Mess” comes at you slow and hard, but still has a cool groove in the mix that keeps this song in line with the others sonically.  The tempo shift at the bridge twists the songs structure and gives it a different feel.  Closer “Canard Vengeur Masque” takes a different approach than the other songs musically, but it fits here.  The guitars are still fuzzy but seem a little more directed and the bass lines cut through the haze of guitars and vocals.
