10 Quick Ones with LOUIS JAMES of DIRTY THRILLS – August 2017

According to a recent press release: “Dirty Thrills are a young, exciting and charismatic London based hard rock quartet who play bluesy rock ‘n’ roll with an appealing filthy edge, churning out endless crowd pleasers that make guitar music sound sexy again. With lung-busting, powerful vocals from front man Louis James, killer guitar riffs from Jack Fawdry and solid low-end grooves from the rhythm section of Aaron Plows and Steve Corrigan, each member’s wide-ranging influences also combine to produce a pool of sound similar to current rock icons such as Queens of the Stone Age, The Black Keys and Rival Sons.” We get singer Louis James to answer our 10 Quick Ones about new music, his influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Its for sure our best work so far, we are very proud of this record, a couple of the songs tie in together kind of a part one part two scenario, you’ll have to guess which ones by listening to the lyrics, the story.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I was born into music, my dad was a musician himself from the 60’s onward, we had a recording studio in the house, which I have fond memories of as a kid, Id scurry into the room while dad was jamming with whoever had popped round at the time. Usually for a joint or several. I think I always knew, I started off as a drummer, then slowly went onto guitar and finally singing. The evolution of a frontman.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Led Zeppelin, QOTSA, The White Stripes, Black Sabbath… too many to name.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

John Lennon

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Raw, Real energized full bodied sexiness.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Learning to live with nothing. You appreciate it more when you have it all.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

We all hate each other really. Nah to be honest we don’t really eat together, we will jam back at my home in Wiltshire a lot, then go to the local to get fully tanked, stumble back, jam then repeat. Its like an all in one where we all take on the role of cook entertainment and bar man.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Nothing. It just wouldn’t be right if it weren’t music.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

Not at all, as shit as this will sound, its all gone the way it should. And whatever happens next, well.. That’s what it’ll be.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Probably those first Beatles recordings. No particular reason, it’d just be nice to see where it kinda all began.
