10 Quick Ones with MARK LOUGHMAN – October 2017

According to a recent press release: “Knives on a plate. Open-mouthed chewing. A loud public cell-phone conversation. These seemingly innocuous sounds of everyday life have jolted Manchester, England-born singer-guitarist Mark Loughman like an electric shock. But when Loughman discovered his reactions were a dead-ringer for an obscure medical condition known as misophonia, he was both relieved and inspired. His latest riveting single, “My Misophonia” — accompanied by a hilarious music video co-directed by Daniel Christiansen and edited by Loughman — Loughman finds wry humor in this chronic condition — educating the rest of us while attempting to navigate the often unbearable sounds of ordinary day-to-day life.” We get Mark  to answer our 10 Quick Ones about new music, his influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Many won’t have heard of misophonia so the lyric may be unusual to them. The first listening may not resonate, but if they watch the video they may relate to these sonic triggers of people chewing in their ear, or people clicking pens. It may ring true for a number of people without them actually realizing it. It is a British indie melody but the subject matter may be new to people.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Once I heard “Life On Mars” and “Starman” by David Bowie, I knew I wanted to write music. As soon as I heard that music, it had everything. It was mysterious. It had guitar licks, it had piano. I really gravitated to guitar based music but it had to have a melodic sensibility.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Bowie, McCartney, Sex Pistols, QOTSA, The Divine Comedy

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

It already happened, Josh Homme.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you?

English Indie rock

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Being able to express or communicate something through a song.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Depends on who-which collab is going on. At the moment, I’m working with David Palmer and Emerson Swinford from Rod Stewart’s band and we are all pretty similar types.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

There is no other dream job :))

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

No, no missteps. I feel I took the long way round for a reason. lf I’d been a big success as a kid, I would have pissed it away by now!

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Probably Never Mind the Bollocks by the Sex Pistols as it was so nuts and bolts simple sounding. It would be a lesson in capturing a snapshot of a period unrest and adjustment with as less frills as possible.
