10 Quick Ones with VINCENT EBEIER of SPYLIGHTS – December 2017

According to the bands bio: “Spylights is a progressive style alternative rock project from New Orleans. The music has many different feels, emotions, and dynamic musical coloring.”  We get Vincent to answer our 10 Quick Ones about new music, his influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Well the debut EP I will be releasing in early 2018, and is a pretty heart on sleeve experience. One of my favorite hidden and meaningful nuggets would have to be that plenty of the vocals have my dogs in the background. If you listen to the vocals soloed, you would hear running, barking, and some other hidden artifacts in there. Most of the time, they were pretty much there through every second of the process!

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Music has always been a big part of my childhood. Both my parents were very talented singers and musicians. They always had music playing as well as musical instruments laying around the house for me to experiment with growing up. That is what really influenced me to want to get into being a musician. I owe them everything for exposing me and influencing me to create music!

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Queen, Michael Jackson, Iron Maiden, Enya, and Plini. All are very unique, legendary, inspirational and well written artists with lots of Integrity, character, and inspirado!

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

I would love to do a collaboration with the mighty Devin Townsend! I love his style, versatility, sense of humor and musical diversity!

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

I’d say our sound is very melodic, dynamic in mood, never limited to genre or one particular style, and can get pretty heavy sometimes with an epic vibe! I’m very ADD so things either need to stay exciting and stimulating for me, or they need to constantly evolve in new directions with new colors!

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

For me it would be the whole creation process. Being able to tastefully create art and use all your pain, pleasure, and your inspiration as a healthy outlet of release is amazing. This isn’t about money or fame in the least for me.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Well the band is very fresh and we haven’t really had the time to experience these quirks or personality traits just yet, but we definitely will know all that real soon. The record was written, played, and recorded by just me. In order to pull it off live, I really had to search to find the right available and capable personnel for the job that fit the vibe of the project.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

I would probably either be rescuing and fostering Pit bulls or writing and directing in film.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

Well I have always given 110% and sacrificed whatever I needed to when it came to my music career or being a part of a band, so I really believe that I did everything that I possibly could have in my power to make things work and run smoothly. I would like to say that I’d take all the time that I spent on different bands that didn’t care enough or failed back, but then I wouldn’t have had the life and learning experiences that shaped me as a professional musician and vocalist. It’s the journey up the hill that really counts and defines you.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I would undoubtedly say I would go back to 1975 to be a part of Night At The Opera by Queen. It is to me one of the most beautifully colorful, dynamic, versatile, and legendary albums of all time! It is such an iconic and amazing record with tons of versatility, musicianship, and integrity. It holds a very dear place within my musical heart as it does for so many!
