10 Quick Ones with MATT NAWARA of THE OUTFIT – February 2018

According to a recent press release: “The Outfit’s self-titled debut album is out now in digital and retail outlets everywhere via Pavement Entertainment, distributed by MRI/Sony-Orchard. The band brings you straight up rock and roll, with catchy hooks and an aggressive sound. The Outfit consists of brothers Mark (drums) and Matt Nawara (guitar), Mike Gorman (bass), and Andy Mitchell (guitar/vocals).” We get Mark Nawara to discuss new music, his influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

The new release is a straight forward rock album that features the talents of the four band members. The goal was to create our own personal distinctive sound and stay away from the cookie cutter over produced sound that so many of the new artists are producing today.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I realized I wanted to be a musician at the early age of 8. Seeing different musical groups performing on TV sparked my interest.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

I’m a guitarist so the five main influences for me are, Jan Akkerman, Steve Howe, Jimi Hendrix, Andy Powell, and Joe Perry.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

I would say Jimi Hendrix, just for his unique approach to his instrument and his song writing.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Straight forward rock, with its own distinctive sound, and memorable songs.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

The creative process of writing and performing.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Each band member currently lives in different parts of the country. So when we are together it’s pretty much all work. Practicing, recording or touring.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Quantum Physicist.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

I believe life is what you make of it. I wouldn’t change a thing.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I would be part of the recording of Yes, Close to the Edge. Seasons will pass you by ~ I get up, I get down
