10 Quick Ones with HENRIK THRANE of BLACK INCOME – March 2018

According to the band’s bio: “Black Income was formed in 2011 by four three with an ambition to create rock music; honest rock music inspired by the early 90’s when grunge was the sound. After only one year together, in 2013, Black Income entered the legendary Medley Studio in Copenhagen, where bands like Radiohead, D-A-D and Kent has recorded some of their best albums. They teamed up with Soren Andersen (Glen Hughes, Mike Tramp, D-A-D) who produced what would become the new album ‘Noise Pollution’” We get Henrik to discuss new music, his influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Well our latest release is called “Feels Like A Storm”, and tells a story about the world we live in, and the things we seek comfort in, to cope with reality. That’s a tough one – you might not get the real feel with the song the first time, but listen to it a couple of times, and you would get in the vibe of the lyrics and the groove. Well we do not aim in that direction, but if you listen to our debut album you might find something :).

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realize you wanted to be a musician?

All of us have played music since we were little kids, Lars (drummer) says, it all started out when he first came across a drum kit, and when he got into it, he came across some rock bands like, Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden and he really fell in love with the energy in the music, and he kept rehearsing until got the hang of Drumming.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Only 5? It’s not easy to find specific 5 bands, but if we have to choose it would be bands like Queens Of The Stone Age, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana and Fu Manchu, but it’s really difficult to aim at just five bands, we listen to a lot of music, and we get inspired by many Genres, so it’s really not just fair to point out 5 of them :).

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

There is so many to choose from, but one guy in particular comes to mind, he has always been inspiration to us and everything he does musically is very professional and very cool. It could be very cool to collaborate with a musician that both has the flair for tone and rhythm at the same time… and we think it would be awesome.. you have properly guessed it by now…  of course it’s Dave Grohl.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Our music is often described as Tight Stoner Grunge with a melodic twist, we aim to write interesting songs, and we really do our best to keep things new, although we play a certain genre like Grunge. We add some new flavors to the genre, and we’re not here to repeat the past at any point, we really aim to do things our own way, and we put a lot of effort into creating our own sound.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

For us it’s creating the music – it’s like painting a picture, the more you put into it the more dimensional it gets. Releasing new music and follow it on its wings flying wherever the wind blows, different songs go different places, and some fans really focus on the lyrics, and others on the music and the riff’s.. But it all comes together when we perform Live, and have the chance to see / fell and talk to the audience, it makes you wanna write more songs.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

What’s an acoustic guitar?? hahaha. It often just ends up with the pizza guy arriving – always to late 🙂 But we’re Danes and we love Beer’s. Drinks are for wimps :). But Lars love homemade food, he never makes it though.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Hmm – is there anything else than being a musician you could dream about?

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

The only thing we regret to this date, it’s signing and releasing our debut album with MIGHTY MUSIC. It started out good but in a couple of months it was clear to us, that these guys just rip you off and nothing gets done right… so we took matters into our own hands, and it’s only because we did so our album got this much attention as it did. Now we’re with TUBE IT – MUSIC and we keep 100% of our rights.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

If this was possible, it would be Nirvana recording NEVERMIND at Sound City with Butch Vig as producer, just being a fly on the wall listening and seeing how they would record and work with the songs, could be awesome. Come to think of it, this record really has a very high dynamic sound, although it’s rough and sleazy, but you can still feel every note in the music and the lyrics for that matter. We would really love to see how they work the way around that.. 🙂
