10 Quick Ones with WORHOL – March 2018

According to a recent press release: “Worhol is a female fronted symphonic rock band out of Texas, but some mistake them for a European band because of their overall sound and appearance. The band delivers a unique style of dark, theatrical, orchestral music that showcases Ashley Worhol’s dynamic mellifluous voice. Worhol is taking 2018 head on with a brand new music video that was filmed in Los Angeles, California by Multi Mojo Productions for their latest single titled “Already Forgotten” and plan to release their EP later this year.” We get the band to discuss new music, influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Ashley:  Our latest release The Awakening is an album that has caught the attention of not only fans but people in the industry as well. Every time you listen to the album you will catch little things you might not have the first time. Whether that be hearing harmonies in the background, certain instrument solos that come in and out or even childish laughing that passes through a song very quickly that makes you rewind to hear it again. We love being creative and adding mysterious things throughout our songs so it does make people question, “what was that?” In regards to hidden nuggets, I’d say a lot of my lyrics have deep meanings. I have no problem being personal with my fans and allowing them into the experiences I have had in my life. For instance, the track, “We, the Abused”, if you truly listen to the lyrics one will know what that song is about without me having to come out and say it. Sometimes there is a healing process with music for both the listener and for the writer.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Ashley: I remember being at a very young age and crawling under the piano to listen to my dad play. Music was always around me and the moment I could reach the piano keys, that is when it all began. I have photos that show me as a toddler trying to reach the piano keys and recordings of me trying to sing while playing. I was always drawn to music and different styles of music as well!

Marty:  As far as getting into music, my parents were both amateur musicians. My dad played trumpet and my mother played piano and sang, so there was always music in the house. I started out on piano, starting to take lessons at about 6 years of age. I started playing drums when I was 10 or 11, and my sister and her boyfriend took me to see the Beatles in Dallas back in 1964. That’s when I realized I wanted to be a drummer in a rock band!

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Marty:  I’d say Ringo Starr, Neil Peart, Louis Bellson, Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Ashley: I’m going to cheat here and say one female and one male! I am a huge fan of Lindsey Stirling and since instrumental music is one of my favorite genres to listen to I would absolutely love to collaborate with her! As far as a male, I am in love with Marco Hietala’s voice from Nightwish. It is my mission to make both of these become a reality!

Larry: The female violin player that tours with TransSiberian Orchestra. She Rocks!!!!

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Craig: I’d say it’s a bit European, Symphonic Rock, but its more something to experience for yourself.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Marty:   I suppose it’s the freedom to be an artist and create something that you put so much of yourself into, and then seeing people respond to what you’ve created in various ways.

Ashley: Being able to be a part of people’s escape. I know personally when I go to a show it’s because I want to feel good and get away from what is going on in the world so in return I want to be able to provide that as well. Being on stage and seeing people smile in the crowd is the most rewarding feeling ever.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Larry: Usually when we hang out, we eat out. I really don’t know if we would consider eating each others cooking. However I have grilled lemon pepper salmon for them.  Musically, Ashley is usually the first one to bring forth the music. She’s always singing or playing some song for us to listen to. She sings in her sleep, I swear. Drinks? We usually bring our own. Mine and Marty’s drink of choice is Dr. Pepper, Ashley’s is sweet tea and Craig is a huge coffee drinker.

Ashley: The one thing I can say about this is that I am NOT the one who cooks. You do not want me cooking! (Haha) I am typically the one who creates the music playlist that we listen to while on the road and I make the guys listen to the whole thing!!

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Craig: After getting my bachelors degree, I’d wanted to work on designing video games. I’ve always drawn up concept art and loved to immerse myself into various fantasy worlds. I’m also no stranger to video games for as long as I can possibly remember.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

Larry: Music has always been a profession for me. I teach, compose, and perform. I wish I would of worried less about what never happened and enjoyed more of what did happen. Just take it each day at a time. Do your best.  Have fun at what you do and tomorrow brings another day for the chance to do it again.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Larry: Definitely “Stairway to Heaven”.  I can still listen to it today and drift away back into my past. It brings back memories of my younger days and the events that occurred every time I heard that song. I don’t know why but it seemed that song was always playing when something important happened to me in my life.  My friends, my work, my relationships, growing up and facing changes. It was always there playing. I even told Ashley that I wanted this song at my funeral when my time has come. The amazing thing I figured out lately is the opening line ACEGB is also found in Fur Elise after the intro.

Ashley: I would have loved to have been in the studio when Evanescence was recording “Fallen”. Evanescence was that one group that I listened to and I heard myself. My style of writing has been compared to Evanescence and they were a group that opened the door for that style! Not only was the music incredible but they inspired so many artists. Little did I know, one day in my future career I would be in studio with the guitarist from Evanescence, John LeCompt! So I guess in reality, part of that magically ended up being a reality and who knows what the future could hold!

Marty: Wow, there are so many! But I think it would be the album Turn, Turn, Turn by the Byrds. They were always one of my favorite groups when I was growing up, and I loved the drum part that Mike Clark played on that tune. It was one of the first albums I bought when i was a kid, and I’d put it on the stereo in my room and play my drums to it and lots of other records.
