Formed back in 1993, the metal band Mushroomhead has stood the test of time. Nine studio albums and sales in the millions speak to their success. Known for their theatric imagery, the band began using elaborate costumes and grotesque masks to loose their identity. Mushroomhead was started as a side project and members did not want to confuse fans and undermine their individual branding. They have a very loyal fan base and are known for putting on outrageous live shows.

The night started early, just after 6 PM with opening acts Like Monroe, The Family Ruin, Vankale, & Crome Molly. As an all-ages show, things deliberately moved along quickly. It was only 9:30 when the stage was set and the lights dimmed. Smoke slowly filled the stage, and then black lights lit up the neon masks of the main act. Security was doing all they could to keep the crowd at bay. Mushroomhead opened with “Qwerty” off their 2014 release The Righteous and the Butterfly. The nine-member band was a bit constrained by the small stage, but it made a much more intimate experience for their rabid fans who were literally just inches away. They played true their roots with pounding percussion highlighted with water works. The guitars were equally raw and loud. The crowd became a giant mosh pit, with plenty of surfing. The band also joined in the fray with not only crowd surfing, but also scaling the rafters. This was Mushroomhead’s final stop of their current tour, and the crowd voiced their appreciation of coming to Knoxville.
