Depeche Mode is traversing the globe on their Global Spirit Tour and a recent date landed them at DTE Energy Music Theatre on a recent Sunday evening.  The venue started filling up once the doors opened and by the time the band was ready to hit the stage for their performance, the pavilion and lawn alike were packed with both diehard and casual fans that came to relive some of their youths as well as dig into tracks from the bands latest release.  The lights dimmed, the music began, and we were off…

Taking a chance on their fans and dipping into the latest disc Spirit, the band kicked the night off with two new songs allowing the crowd to settle in quickly and enjoy some songs they may or may not know, but the reaction was everything the band wanted – with everybody on their feet, dancing, singing, and overall enjoying the new material.  From there, more familiar tracks flowed through the sound system delivering hits and fan favorites from across various albums in the bands catalog. While there may have been a little more screaming, clapping, and other fans responses on these older tracks, the audience seemed to respond to all the music played tonight with the same vigor and excitement.  A high point for a lot of fans was the acoustic version of “A Question Of Lust” that popped into the set nearly half way through the bands allotted time.  With five new songs decorating the musical landscape, there was plenty of time for deeper tracks and fan favorites to be played.  With each song the band played and each minute that passed, the energy in the crowd grew as the more popular songs were approaching.  The venue seemed to explode and sing in unison as “Enjoy The Silence” made its way into the evening’s lineup.  An added surprise on this tour is a killer version of David Bowie’s “Heroes” that was a perfect blend of the original arrangement slightly tweaked to fit Depeche Mode’s sound.  Set closer “Personal Jesus” was as powerful tonight as it was the first time I heard the song when it was releases 27 years ago.  As someone who is less than a casual fan of the band’s music and catalog, I missed hearing “People Are People” but was impressed with the bands performance and song selection for the tour and their Detroit tour stop.  Get out and see these guys before they head to Europe later this year and 2018.
