If there was ever a perfect excuse to start a mosh pit in Knoxville, it was definitely when DevilDriver brought its tour to the Concourse at The International. The show opened up with Tetrarch from Atlanta. The band brought a nu metal/metalcore vibe that started a mosh pit within the first few minutes of the show. The band is promoting their new album called Freak, which drops on September 29th. I definitely recommend checking it out. Uncured followed, with a very different sound. Uncured describe themselves as progressive death metal. What struck me the most was the band’s incredible guitar work (and also the lead singer’s preference to only speak in growls in between songs). Cane Hill took the stage next, bringing back more nu metal and industrial vibes. They reminded me a lot of oldschool Powerman 5000, Korn, and Slipknot. Cane Hill is loud, hard-hitting, and definitely a big fan favorite. 36 Crazyfists formed more than 20 years ago, and they’re already promising fans another album this month. Their maturity showed on stage, as both their new and old material was enough to get the crowd moving. It was the perfect time in the show to grab a beer, bump around in the mosh pit, and headband. Finally, it was time for DevilDriver and the mood instantly changed. These are the kinds of shows I love because everyone in the room becomes united in their love of metal. The mosh pit had security on edge. I wrote down a quote from frontman Dez Fafara that perfectly described their set. “This is what makes DevilDriver different. You can fuck to it, you can fight to it.”
