Located just about two miles south of downtown Indy, the Fountain Square cultural district is home to a variety of trendy restaurants, art studios and several music venues. What was once a neighborhood event, the festival has grown each year and now features some of the hottest new modern music artists. This year’s headliners included Real Estate, Dr. Dog, Coin, The Cool Kids, Bishop Briggs, and Phantogram. The Nucleus stage was placed on Virginia Avenue with a series of lights lining both sidewalks. The historic buildings provided a backdrop for the synchronized light show during the acts. Friday night got started in the late afternoon on what turned out to be a perfect autumn night. Coin got the crowd going on the main stage with his high energy set. He was followed up by Real Estate, then Friday’s headliner Dr. Dog. The street was packed for their performance. The crowd was great and sang aloud with the band. The Nucleus stage was not the only show in town, four other venues hosted artists through 2:30 AM. Conveniently, all are within a one block radius, making this an ideal site to support the festival. Notable acts included Weshley Arms who put on a killer show at Hi-Fi Indy and Flint Eastwood at the White Rabbit. Saturday started early afternoon at the main stage with Clint Breeze and the Groove followed by local artist Hoops. Clouds rolled in the early evening as rain approached. Rappers, The Cool Kids, had the base pumping and fans jumping during their set. Rain fell as Bishop Briggs took the stage. The fans weren’t fazed, staying throughout in support. She thanked everyone for enduring the weather and then put on a fantastic show. As more severe weather approached, a delay was issued for the night’s headliner Phantogram. The crowd dispersed to the other venues and had a chance to see other acts while the rain passed. As the crew removed tarps on the Nucleus stage, the fans returned in anticipation. Phantogram was well worth the wait. They played all their hit songs for the enthusiastic fans. The night was not over as shows continued at the other venues ‘til 2 AM. The festival was well a really unique event, having a neighborhood feel yet with national acts. It was chance to see some up and comers as well as headliners. I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend and can’t wait to see what is in store for next year’s festival.
