CHEVRON GARDENS GIGS TO ROCK ELIZABETH QUAY FOR THE PERTH FESTIVAL

CHEVRON GARDENS GIGS TO ROCK ELIZABETH QUAY FOR THE PERTH FESTIVAL

Perth celebrates the return of Chevron Gardens to Elizabeth Quay, presenting dozens of electrifying acts with a clear mission to make you move or be moved.

Perth Festival is bringing you the bangers, igniting the city’s front-yard and riverside hot spot where the balmy summer nights are punctuated by global beats.

From the soles of your feet to the inner recesses of your heart, this is the place where your musical memories will be made.

The two stages – our Mainstage and the Gardens Stage – will feature a showcase of contemporary music spanning UK grime, cinematic pop, 50s rockabilly, dirty rock ‘n’ roll, Afropunk, soul, hip-hop and even a mini-festival celebrating Australia’s finest female talent.

We open the three-week Gardens party on February 9 with a hot new wave of artists from across the country who fuse traditional culture with contemporary beats.

Kicking off the night are the harmonious, dreamy voices of Kardajala Kirridarra, the Sandhill Women from the Northern Territory desert with their electro soundscape. South Australia’s Electric Fields bring the party with their grinding electro-pop splendour and angelic vocals. Joining them are maestros Skinnyfish Sound System remixing their catalogue of masters with live didj, beat poets and Arnhem Land rap.

‘Our opening night celebration sets the tone for Chevron Gardens in 2018,’ says Contemporary Music Program Associate, Clara Iaccarino. ‘The program is peppered with genre-bending artists who not only create exciting, fresh sounds, but they are challenging the status quo and sparking conversations that transcend musical engagement.

‘Our dual purpose is to make you move or be moved and in many instances we are confident the artists we are presenting will do both,” says Iaccarino. “We encourage you to enjoy the familiar faces, but more importantly, take risks. Every night at Chevron Gardens promises to feed the soul.’

Chevron Australia Managing Director Nigel Hearne says Chevron is proud to continue its support of Perth Festival, and in particular the Chevron Gardens.

‘Perth Festival continues to bring enriching, world class cultural experiences to the local community, helping to cement Perth as a truly global city and a thriving place to work and live,’ Mr Hearne says.

Perth’s finest restaurants, Lalla Rookh, Sauma and The Standard will tantalise your tastebuds while our selection of summer drinks will keep the spirits high.

After the great success of 2017, homegrown talent is again set to ignite the Gardens Stage with free entertainment every night of the Festival.

Whether you’re embracing unknown sounds or echoing familiar refrains, we defy you to keep your dancing feet still or your soul untouched.

Some Festival favourites in the Chevron Gardens program include:

SHIGETO & TOO MANY ZOOZ

With a blast of drums, horns and street- fresh awesome, Too Many Zooz burst from the depths of the NYC subway system, busking their way into the dust-kicking dancefloors of festivals across the globe and to the Chevron Gardens on February 21.

Shigeto’s beat-driven, richly textured sound design will take you on a journey into a frenetic wilderness. With influences spanning across the realms of hip-hop, jazz and electronica, Shigeto is renowned for his mind-blowing live show as he moves from electronic wizardry to the drum kit.

TFS + FINGERFINGERRR + THE TREES AND THE WILD

From the depths of the sweatiest mosh pits across the globe we bring you a power punch of dirty rock ‘n’ roll ferocity.

Tropical Fuck Storm (TFS) are a mad art-punk-psych-experimental-rock band combining the talents of Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin from The Drones, High Tension‘s Lauren Hammel and Eric Dunn from Palm Springs and Harmony.

Joining TFS is Brazil’s Fingerfingerrr, a combination of outrageous riffs and rambunctious pop-punk tomfoolery. Completing this epic bill is Indonesia’s ambient post rock band, The Trees and the Wild. For lovers of Explosions in the Sky and cinematic soundscapes of pulsating intensity, this band is a must-see.

THE STAVES & LUCIUS

The Staves are a folk-tinged trio of sisters who blend the wistful cadences of classic British folk with breezy 70s Americana. Joining The Staves in the harmonious double bill, Brooklyn favourites Lucius will belt out an evocative brand of torchy, pedal-steel infused, indie folk-pop.

Lucius is led by two strikingly kooky frontwomen who will head straight to the Gardens after touring Australia and beyond as Roger Water’s backup singers.

EMILY KING & HARRY JAMES ANGUS

Grammy nominee Emily King blends soul, pop and swoon, the perfect vehicle for her polished, lush vocals. King’s records evoke an instinctual happiness and her live performances are renowned for seeping deep into the heart.

Joining the New York heartthrob is The Cat Empire’s Harry James Angus with his latest incarnation Struggle With Glory. In this new project, Angus combines exhilarating jazz and gospel with Greek mythology, featuring an all-star band overflowing with Melbourne’s slickest jazz aficionados.

JOJO ABOT + STAY JAY

Hailing from Ghana via Brooklyn, Jojo Abot is a revolutionary of Afro-hypno-sonic sound, an experimental blend of electronica, Afrobeat, jazz, neo-soul, house, and reggae. The new kween of contemporary African sound is equal parts Erykah Badu and performance art hurricane. On March 3 her hypnotic vocals and sheer presence will take over Chevron Gardens.

Completing the bill is a star of Ghana’s future soul Afrobeat scene, the charismatic Stay Jay. Renowned for bringing the sweet party vibes, Stay Jay will ensure the crowd is jumping and an array of Afrobeat DJs will close the night in style.
