BOOK REVIEW: 88 Reasons Why Australia Is The Craziest by Simon Crerar
Reviewed by Shane Pinnegar
Exactly like those old Post or People Magazines (except without the boobs) that used to sensationalise everything into garish headlines in the hope of appealing to those who are entertained by such things, Simon Crerar has assembled “yarns to make you shriek and freaky photographs that’ll blow your mind,” but claims that “you should 1. Never visit Australia in the first place, and 2. If you’re already here, never leave the safety of your own home,” are only likely to scare the most timid of foreigners.
Australians are made of sterner stuff: crocs, sharks, spiders, snakes, fires, floods, and a myriad of other supposedly life-threatening dangers (magpies??? Puhhhlease!!!) are all sensationalised and glorified and given the Sharknado treatment.
It comes as no surprise that Crerar is the Australian editor of frenetic clickbait purveyors BuzzFeed, but the sadder reality is that there are plenty of shallow voyeuristic types who will get a thrill from a schlocky piece of exaggerated rubbish like this. Good on ‘em – we’ll pass, thanks.
