Taxi ran for five years from 1978, and its cast of relative unknowns quickly became household names, going on to bigger – but rarely better – things.

Danny DeVito played Louie DePalma, is the boss at a busy New York taxi depot, growling orders at all and sundry, and flinching at the one liners fired at him by drivers, girlfriends and customers, including Judd Hirsch, Tony Danza, Marilu Henner, Jeff Conaway, Christopher Lloyd, Carol Kane, Rhea Perlman and Andy Kaufman.

Perfectly pitched for the era, the show was hilarious and – perhaps surprisingly – mostly stands up well today. That’s not something that can be said for a lot of very dated series!

Chief writers Glen Charles and Les Charles, along with director James Burrows, left after Season 4, and Season 5 struggles along without their firm hand on the tiller. It’s not really a surprise that the show was canned after one more season, while Charles, Charles and Burrows had a big hit on their hand with another American blue collar sitcom: Cheers, which ran for a mighty eleven seasons!

Over 17 discs you get all 114 episodes of Taxi – over 2700 minutes of viewing time, which means a whole lotta binging – 45-plus hours, in fact.
